From ESG to Strategic Sustainability

Why You Should Start Climbing ‘Mount Sustainability’ (Without Losing Your Mind)

A Filipino guide for professionals navigating the corporate sustainability jungle

Fifteen years ago, I sat in a monthly meeting with the CEO of Interface EMEA. If you haven’t heard of Interface, it’s one of the world’s most sustainability-driven companies – and yes, they make carpets.
During those meetings we weren’t just talking about recycled materials or net-zero goals. We were exploring something called the FSSD – the Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development.
At first, I thought it was just another sustainability model with a fancy acronym. But after a few meetings, something clicked. This wasn’t a trend or a tool. It was a new way of thinking – one that pulled all the loose threads of sustainability into a single, strategic, coherent roadmap.
☝🏽 Why ESG Isn’t Enough
ESG has brought sustainability into the boardroom. But often, it turns into a checklist: measure this, disclose that. It doesn’t always help us make better decisions or work together toward shared goals.
What’s missing is alignment – a shared language, a clear picture of success, and a way to plan across departments. This is where the FSSD shines.
🪑 The FSSD in Simple Terms
The FSSD was developed by scientists and practitioners over the past 30 years and is used by global companies like IKEA, Electrolux, Scandic Hotels, and Interface. It’s designed to help organizations move strategically toward a sustainable future.
Here’s what it includes:
  • A science-based definition of sustainability grounded in 4 principles (covering both the environment and society).
  • A five-level model for understanding systems, defining success, setting strategy, taking action, and using the right tools.
  • Backcasting – a powerful way to plan by starting with the future we want, then working backwards to today.
  • The ABCD Method – a hands-on process for creating a sustainability strategy that actually works.
It’s basically the Google Maps of sustainability – with detour alerts, destination insights, and turn-by-turn support.
🌏 How It Helps You Activate the SDGs
Let’s talk about the UN Sustainable Development Goals – those 17 colorful boxes we see everywhere. They’re bold, inspiring, and important. But let’s be real: in most organizations, they’re hard to operationalize. That’s where the FSSD comes in.
The FSSD helps organizations:
  • Understand the systems behind the SDGs – so you see how goals like climate action (SDG 13), decent work (SDG 😎, and responsible consumption (SDG 12) are interconnected.
  • Set a principled vision for what true success looks like – aligned with all 17 goals, not just the easy ones.
  • Create strategic roadmaps using backcasting, to move step-by-step toward SDG alignment.
  • Avoid trade-offs – like solving one goal but accidentally harming another (e.g., cheap clean energy that causes inequality).
  • Collaborate better – using shared language to bring departments and stakeholders together around common goals.
Instead of picking one or two SDGs to focus on (and ignoring the others), the FSSD helps companies take a systems approach. It supports deep integration, so your work on gender equality, clean water, innovation, or climate action becomes strategic, not siloed.
It’s like upgrading from a scattered barangay fiesta to a full-on national strategy – coordinated, aligned, and effective.
🇵🇭 Why This Matters for Filipino Professionals
In the Philippines, we face unique sustainability challenges – from climate risks and inequality to rapid urban growth and plastic pollution. But we also have powerful opportunities. Filipino professionals are already leading change in companies, NGOs, startups, and government. What we need now is a framework to work smarter together.
The FSSD gives us that framework. It helps us:
  • Get different teams aligned (even procurement and marketing!)
  • Make better long-term business decisions
  • Speak a common language about sustainability
  • Create impact that lasts – not just compliance for today
