New e-learning, live from 1 August 2026

You are where sustainability starts to move

A sustainability plan changes nothing while it sits on paper. It comes alive the moment someone retells it to a colleague, a resident or a customer who then decides to join in. That moment is communication. It has become one of the most important parts of your sustainability policy.

This e-learning teaches you to lead it so people truly move with you. Practical, evidence-based, in three versions, each tuned to where you stand.

Why this work has changed

Communicating about sustainability has become a different discipline

In the early nineties, anyone communicating about the environment wrote a report, factual and a little defensive. Around the turn of the century that turned into the corporate responsibility story, packaged more neatly, with nicer pictures. Today a sustainability story asks for more. Showing what you do is the start. Moving people is the goal. Communication no longer describes the change from a distance, it helps make it happen.

That is where it differs from ordinary communication. An ordinary message passes on information. Sustainability communication has to build trust, behaviour and cooperation, often over a long stretch, often with people who never asked for it. The goal is different, so the skills are different. This looks more like marketing than public information, more about moving with people and making things appealing than broadcasting and justifying. And it means that you, whether you carry the sustainability file or the communication, sit in a place that genuinely matters.

What matters to us here

From a plan on paper to change in your organisation

We did not build this course to help you write a smoother press release. We built it because sustainability only truly takes hold once it is embedded in how an organisation thinks, chooses and acts. Communicating is one of the ways you get that done, alongside governance, policy, leadership and behaviour. The wheel below shows where communication fits in that larger whole, the areas where an organisation embeds sustainability, each with its own parts. This course zooms in on the communication side while keeping the whole in view.

How the course fits together

From the inside out, from day one

The course runs from the inside out. First your own organisation, because a message to the outside world is never stronger than the action behind it. Then the space you work in. Then the world beyond, your audience in all its different groups.

And one more thing, perhaps the most important. In many organisations communication gets tacked on at the end, once the plan is finished and all that is left is to wrap a message around it. That is the surest way to run a good project aground. We teach you to reverse the role. Communication sits inside the projects themselves, from day one. Along the way you gather the stories, the figures and the moments you draw on later.

Everything you learn rests on a solid foundation. On international research into what works, on best practices from the field and on twenty years of applying it with sustainability pioneers. Each lesson trains one concrete skill with a short self-check. The course closes with a final test and a certificate.

For every sector

You tell it every day and still it does not land

You talk about sustainability in the corridors, in the newsletter, on the site. To you the topic is crystal clear. To everyone else it stays vague or far away. What is missing is an approach that carries you from listening first to showing in the end. One more campaign will not do it.

“Everyone nods in the meeting and nothing changes.”

“I know what I want to say, not how it lands.”

What the general version gives you

The complete approach, from the inside out. You start with listening, with different questions than you are used to, before you broadcast anything. Then you build your story in the order that carries people along rather than losing them. And you tie your message to one concrete step, because that is where movement begins.

Showing what you do, without it sounding like PR

The council is watching, the press is watching, residents are watching too, each with a different stake. You want to build trust and account for what you do, without vague promises, without that feeling of standing on a stage selling something the room saw through long ago.

“Say too little and no one knows, say too much and it reads as boasting.”

“Our residents switch off at the word sustainability.”

What the municipalities version gives you

This is about public trust and engagement. You tie your message to what residents care about, you learn to tell one audience from another, you invite people to take part and help decide in a way that takes them seriously rather than talking down to them. Participation sits at the centre here, it is how trust forms and how a decision holds up later. See also our e-learning Sustainability, the basics for local government.

Your report is right and your marketing says something else

Since the new European rules that gap has turned from a detail into a risk. A claim you fail to back costs you money and trust at once. And inside the organisation the marketing department and the sustainability team often speak almost the same language yet not quite, so the finest promise and the honest figure pass each other by.

“Am I still allowed to put it this way since the new rules?”

“Our marketing promises more than our report delivers.”

What the businesses version gives you

The law and the brand side by side. You make claims that hold up against the CSRD and the ESRS standards, then get to know the two sides of the same risk. Greenwashing, promising too much and not delivering. And greenhushing, staying silent about what you do out of fear of criticism. The safe middle path lies between the two. You learn to find it here, right in time for the requirements coming your way.

The content

Ten lessons, from the inside out

The course runs in two halves. First inward, because a story that does not live inside will not hold up outside. Then outward. Ten lessons, each with a short self-check.

Inside the organisation

1
Listen firstUnderstand what is going on before you broadcast. You practise with questions that open up rather than steer. You create the space where people dare to say honestly what holds them back.
2
Get movement goingOpen with the gain and tie the pain to a step. The core lesson on the balance between hope and concern. You learn why fear freezes people sooner than it moves them and how to tie every message to something someone could do today.
3
Move your leadersBring your board and managers on side. You learn to address your leadership in their own language, from cost and risk to reputation, so they come to carry the change rather than merely tolerate it.
4
Tell the storyBuild a story that moves people and carries them along. You work with the structure of self, us and now, then connect your own drive to a shared picture colleagues recognise themselves in.
5
Give the signalShow through behaviour what counts. You see how small acts, what you measure, reward and model, speak louder than any message. And you learn to use those signals on purpose.

To the outside world

1
Know your audienceDivide your audience by values and choose the right messenger. You learn to sort people by what they care about rather than by age or postcode, then for each group choose the messenger they trust.
2
Frame the messagePut your message in the order that works. You learn why you open with the appealing prospect and then name the problem and the solution. And you see what that order does to people.
3
Make it hold upAvoid greenwashing and keep your claims standing. You learn to back every claim with a reason and an action, to apply the new European rules and to find the middle path between promising too much and staying silent out of fear.
4
Show itChoose images that stick. You learn to choose images that show real people and real consequences rather than polar bears and clichés. And you use the SDG icons sparingly and with meaning.
5
Dealing with disinformationRecognise the tricks and debunk them in time. You learn to spot the recurring patterns, to make people resilient in advance and to debunk a stubborn myth without reinforcing it by accident.

Alongside this comes a bridging lesson on communicating through space itself, plus a final test with a certificate. Expect around 4 to 5 hours of self-paced study, including the final assignment.

What you take away

After the course you approach it differently

No theory to memorise, only skills you put to work the Monday after.

  • You open every conversation with what there is to gain and name the pain only after.
  • You read your audience and choose the messenger they trust.
  • You make claims that pass the test of the law and the press.
  • You choose images that stick rather than images people click away from.
  • You stand firmer when headwind or disinformation comes.

Connect the course to your own learning environment

Want to offer the course inside your own LMS? That works. Through the LTI standard the e-learning runs in your existing learning environment, with single sign-on and progress that flows back into your system.

The course is built around skills, not around chapters. Each lesson trains one concrete communication skill with a self-check, plus a final test that shows what someone is able to do. That way it fits skill-based learning and your own competency framework.

Why now

The bar keeps rising and that is good news if you are prepared

From 27 September 2026 the European Empowering Consumers directive sets tougher demands on what you are allowed to say about sustainability. Vague claims without proof are off the table from then on. Awkward if you are unprepared, a head start if you already have it in order. The course builds those rules in already.

Frequently asked questions

Honest answers

Is this a training or an e-learning and how much time does it take?
It is an e-learning you work through at your own pace, not a classroom training. Expect around 4 to 5 hours, spread over ten short lessons, a bridging lesson and a final test. You start whenever it suits you.
What is sustainability communication and why does it matter?
Sustainability communication is the work of conveying sustainability credibly, inside your organisation and to the outside world. It matters because a good cause does not sell itself and because vague or misleading claims now carry legal risk under the new EU rules too.
Who is the course for?
For sustainability professionals and for communication and marketing people. There are three versions: one for general practice, one for municipalities and local government, one for businesses.
Is it possible to connect the course to my own LMS?
Yes. Through the LTI standard the course runs in your own learning environment, with single sign-on and progress in your system. The setup is skill-based, each lesson trains a skill with a test that shows what someone is able to do.
How do you avoid greenwashing in your communication?
You avoid greenwashing by backing every claim with a reason and a way to act, then by staying silent where you have no proof yet. The course teaches you the safe middle path between claiming too much and anxious silence.
What does the course cost and when does it start?
The course goes live on 1 August 2026. Three options are coming, for an individual, a team and an organisation. We announce the prices at launch, with a launch benefit for everyone on the waitlist.
Do I get a certificate?
Yes. Anyone who passes the final test receives a certificate.
